Spring Clean Your Mind: 5 Steps to Mental Clarity

Writer: Andrea GriggsAndrea Griggs

As we welcome spring, it’s natural to think about decluttering our homes, but what about our minds? Mental clutter—unresolved thoughts, stress, and worries—can leave you feeling overwhelmed and stuck. This month, we’re focusing on practical ways to let go of mental clutter and create space for clarity, focus, and peace of mind.

  1. Step 1: Identify What’s Cluttering Your Mind

    • Write down your recurring thoughts, worries, or unfinished tasks.

    • Ask yourself: Are these thoughts actionable, or are they simply taking up space?

    • Tip: Use the “Mind Dump” technique—spend 10 minutes each morning jotting down everything on your mind.

  2. Step 2: Prioritize and Let Go

    • Sort your list into categories: Urgent, Important, Delegate, or Delete.

    • Example: If worrying about a past mistake is cluttering your thoughts, practice self-compassion and remind yourself: I did the best I could with the knowledge I had at the time.

  3. Step 3: Practice Daily Mindfulness

    • Simple mindfulness exercises like the “5-4-3-2-1” grounding technique can help reduce mental chatter:

      • 5 things you see

      • 4 things you feel

      • 3 things you hear

      • 2 things you smell

      • 1 thing you taste

  4. Step 4: Set Boundaries Around Mental Space

    • Limit exposure to negativity, such as doom-scrolling on social media.

    • Practice saying “no” to commitments that drain your energy.

  5. Step 5: Schedule “Worry Time”

    • Set aside 15 minutes daily to focus on your worries. During this time, write them down and brainstorm solutions. When the time is up, consciously let them go.
